BATTODO JAPANESE SWORD: trial lesson

1:00-3:00pm ‘Batto’ means to draw and strike with the sword. ‘Do’ refers to a path of training aimed at the complete development of the practitioner. The closer to the reality of combat one can get the more this training has to offer. 2. YAMABUSHI

The ancient tradition of Yamabushi , mountain ascetics, will be explored through the poems of Enku one of the greatest yamabushi. These will be read by John Evans who will also read some poems from Trog an account of his experiences training in these disciplines in the mountains of Japan in the 1980s. Copies of Trog and In Heaven's River poems and carvings by Enku translated by Julian Daizan Skinner and Sumiko Hayashi will be available for sale. All profits from these sales will go to Aid For Japan.

3. LECTURE: “ The Role of Women in Japanese Culture and Society”

Speaker Akemi Tanaka is the daughter of an old samurai family and grew up immersed in the traditional arts and culture of Japan. Akemi is frequently requested to provide insight on Japanese culture by a variety of TV, radio and press outlets. She will examine the important and changing role of women in Japan from their participation in traditional arts like Kimono and the Tea ceremony to their struggle to attain equality in the corridors of power.
