BATTODO JAPANESE SWORD: trial lesson

1:00-3:00pm
‘Batto’ means to draw and strike with the sword. ‘Do’ refers to a path of training aimed at the complete development of the practitioner. The closer to the reality of combat one can get the more this training has to offer.

This two hour seminar will begin with an introduction to this martial arts system, the goals and method of Battodo as a way of cultivation and then a practical class on the preparatory exercises and basic techniques (kihon).

2. YAMABUSHI

The ancient tradition of Yamabushi , mountain ascetics, will be explored through the poems of Enku one of the greatest yamabushi. These will be read by John Evans who will also read some poems from Trog an account of his experiences training in these disciplines in the mountains of Japan in the 1980s.

Copies of Trog and In Heaven’s River poems and carvings by Enku translated by Julian Daizan Skinner and Sumiko Hayashi will be available for sale. All profits from these sales will go to Aid For Japan.

3. LECTURE: “ The Role of Women in Japanese Culture and Society”

Speaker Akemi Tanaka is the daughter of an old samurai family and grew up immersed in the traditional arts and culture of Japan. Akemi is frequently requested to provide insight on Japanese culture by a variety of TV, radio and press outlets. She will examine the important and changing role of women in Japan from their participation in traditional arts like Kimono and the Tea ceremony to their struggle to attain equality in the corridors of power.

UK-based Japan culture consultant Akemi Tanaka will be offering a special opportunity for students to visit her Richmond home for a Kimono Demonstration and Japanese Tea Ceremony.

The kimono (着物) has become established as one of the more recognisable elements of Japanese culture. This traditional style of dress can embrace many different styles and uses and is still in use in modern Japan.

This class will include an opportunity for attendees to be told about the history of the kimono and also given an opportunity to try one on!

Akemi will also explain about the tradition of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and treat attendees to their own Tea Ceremony.

As a UK-based lecturer and consultant on Japanese culture, Akemi Tanaka has helped to promote the traditions of her native country over many years.

Akemi will be traveling to Japan this October to take part in a cultural exchange event in Fukushima, Japan. This is part of Akemi’s role with the charity Aid For Japan and will involve bringing together British children with Japanese children who lost their parents due to the Tsunami.

Akemi Tanaka will be a guest at the forthcoming Doki Doki Manchester Japanese Festival this November. Akemi will be talking about the traditional Japanese kimono as well as the Tea Ceremony. She will also be conducting a calligraphy workshop.

Doki Doki is an annual event held in Manchester celebrating both traditional and modern Japanese culture.

Aid For Japan (the charity that Akemi founded) will also be Doki Doki’s charity of choice for this year’s event.

A language conference in Hill View School For Girls in which Akemi will be presenting a talk titled ‘Introduce Japanese Language and Culture’.

Akemi presents a lecture on ‘The Role and Lifestyle of Women in Japan’ at the Sheffield Women’s Lecture Club.
